Cultivation of microalgae

For nearly three decades, as a pioneer in the cultivation of microalgae in France, AlgoSource has been able to develop expertise by being an actor throughout the value chain: selection of the best strains, culture management, extraction of bioactive ingredients of high added value, clinical objectification of functionalities and cold sterile packaging. This presence at each stage makes AlgoSource a unique player in microalgae.

Thanks to its experience, AlgoSource puts microalgae to the service of human, animal and plant health.

Cultivation of spirulina

AlgoSource cultivates its spirulina mainly in open basins under greenhouses (or raceways) while respecting the natural reproduction and growth cycles of the strains. The algofarm for cultivation of spirulina is located in the town of Assérac, in the middle of the salt marshes of the Guérande peninsula in western France. Between Brittany and Pays de la Loire, it benefits from a privileged natural location, at the bottom of a magnificent bay, the Bay of Pen Bé. This idyllic geographic location obliges the company: to preserve the natural environment in which it evolves, to respect the natural life cycle of microalgae strains, to control and minimize the impacts of its production.

To guarantee the best quality of the extracts, culture management is essential. The use of microalgae biomass for nutraceutical, health or cosmetic purposes makes it necessary to perfectly master conservation in order to obtain the desired quality and richness in active nutrients.

By being an actor in production and not only a buyer for third parties, AlgoSource is able to perfectly master and manage the conditions and culture of the microalgae it uses. This is particularly the case for the quality of water required to cultivate the strains; it is very regularly analysed to check its purity to ensure production of the healthiest biomass possible. The experience acquired over the past three decades also offers AlgoSource teams unique expertise in perfectly mastering the required inputs (the “feeding” of microalgae), so as to provide only the bare essentials for optimal and clean growth of biomass.

Rich with this experience, AlgoSource has embarked on the demanding path of Ecocert certification, the first step towards obtaining the Organic Agriculture label.

Cultivation of other strains

In addition to Spirulina, AlgoSouce also grows other strains of microalgae to create ingredients used in nutraceutical or cosmetic products. In this context, AlgoSource masters the production of photobioreactors. Its collaboration with the GEPEA laboratory led it to develop its own tools, in a permanent search for production optimization and improvement of the biomass concentrations in the molecules of interest targeted. Like raceways, photobioreactors require perfect mastery of culture management, an area of expertise for AlgoSource teams.

Very sensitive to the environmental impact of its production facilities, AlgoSource has also become involved in the development of a new-generation culture photobioreactor, making it possible to produce microalgae at high intensity in a limited space, in an optimized time and with minimized consumption of inputs and fluids.
